Eating cooked meat can affect kidney function testing
In a study of healthy volunteers and 80 patients with diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD), UK researchers demonstrated that six out of 16 patients were wrongly classified as CKD stage 3b after eating cooked meat.
The effect of eating cooked meat disappeared after 12 hours, they found.
The researchers recommended clinicians use fasting eGFR to avoid misclassification of patients into more severe stages of renal disease, which may affect therapeutic decisions.
