Elderly benefit from kids’ herd immunity

“We did expect to see a level of herd immunity but we were pleasantly surprised by the extent of it,” Dr Robert Menzies, deputy director at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) and lead author of the study said.

“We think it is a result of the particular pneumococcal serotypes circulating in Australia,” he said, adding that non-Indigenous Australians had one of the highest rates of 7vPCV-type IPD of all serotypes in the world.
