Endoscopy nurses in propofol controversy

Nurses at The Canberra Hospital have been giving propofol to patients undergoing endoscopies without medical supervision, contrary to guidelines set down by the College of Anaesthetists.

The ABC’s 7.30 program has revealed that nurses were giving propofol, fentanyl and midazolam to patients at the gastroenterology suites from 2000-2016, in a practice called Endoscopist-Directed-Nurse-Administered-Propofol-Sedation (EDNAPS).
