Erectile drug linked to melanoma?
According to some experts, the findings could support increased screening of men at risk of melanoma who are being treated for ED with the drug, which is available in generic form but better known as Viagra manufactured by Pfizer.
The prospective cohort study involved 25,848 men aged 40–75 years. In addition to being asked about ED and sildenafil use, the men were also asked about family history of melanoma, life-time number of sunburns, number of moles and natural hair colour, which researchers used to control for confounding risk factors for melanoma.
Just over 1300 of the men reported taking sildenafil for erectile dysfunction recently at baseline, while 1618 reported ever using it.
Over the 10-year follow-up, 142 of the 25,848 men developed melanoma, 580 developed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and 3030 reported basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
