Establishing causes of insomnia

A total of 955 completed questionnaires were suitable for analysis. This found that 41% of the respondents had a sleep problem. Approximately 19% of this group were taking medicine to help them sleep.

Only 12% of the 388 people with a sleep problem had primary insomnia. All the other patients had at least one possible explanation for their problem.

Anxiety and depression were the most common conditions causing insomnia. In 43% of the patients a general health problem was a contributing factor.
