Excess folate raises malignancy

In a review of the harms and benefits of folic acid in Australian Prescriber, three rheumatologists reminded health professionals of reports suggesting an increased risk of breast, prostate, colorectal and endometrial cancer with folic acid supplementation.

“Observational studies have shown source specific effects, with dietary folate being protective while folic acid supplements were harmful or without effect in relation to cancer risk,” the authors stated.
