‘Excessive’ antipsychotic use in kids

According to the report, the number of scripts supplied across all age groups, including to adults, grew by 70% between May 2007 and May 2012 with an estimated 12,680 children and adolescents taking an antipsychotic in October 2012.

The three most commonly used antipsychotics in the 0—19 age group were risperidone, quetiapine and olanzapine.

Scripts were mostly written by GPs, with the exception of risperidone, but the analysis was not able to distinguish whether a specialist was consulted first.
