Expert panel advises against arthroscopy for degenerative knee disease


Knee arthroscopy should not be used to treat degenerative knee disease, an expert panel of orthopaedic specialists says, because it “does not, on average, result in lasting improvement”.

Drawing on two new systematic reviews, the panel says the procedure may produce, at best, small and short-term improvements in pain or function in less than 15% of patients - and even those improvements are not sustained after three months.
