Experts debate new bipolar guidelines

The new diagnostic guidelines, to be introduced this month, will cause more confusion for medical professionals, according to Professor Gin Malhi of the University of Sydney.

Professor Malhi said the new DSM-5 diagnostic guidelines would further obscure the boundary between major depression and bipolar disorder.

“DSM-5 has moved the goalposts. My concern is diagnosis is going to become more complicated, so that people who don’t have the illness get labelled as having it.”

However, Professor Gordon Parker of the University of NSW said the majority of patients with the condition were never diagnosed.
