Exposure risk

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)is HIV antiretroviral medication taken within 72 hours of HIV exposure to reduce the likelihood of HIV transmission.

Depending upon the risk involved, two or three agents are prescribed for 28 days. 

PEP is available for occupational exposure and non-occupational exposure (NPEP), the latter most likely to present in primary care. Presentations include unprotected sex (female-male and male-male), sexual assault, needle assaults and community needlestick
