Faecal transplants promising in ulcerative colitis

Australian researchers have shown that faecal microbiota transplantation is an effective treatment for drug-resistant ulcerative colitis.

Their double-blind, multicentre trial randomised 81 patients to placebo or an intensive regimen that included one faecal transplant by colonoscopy, followed by eight weeks of patient-administered enemas.

In the treatment arm, 27% of patients met the endpoint of both clinical and endoscopic remission
