Faster paracetamol antidote infusion advised

Infusing acetylcysteine over a shorter time span after paracetamol overdose can significantly reduce adverse events, new research shows.

The randomised controlled trial of 222 patients found that a shorter acetylcysteine infusion time of 12 hours compared to the standard protocol of just over 20 hours substantially reduced the frequency of vomiting and retching and the need for antiemetic medication.

Vomiting was further reduced by giving a pre-treatment dose of the antiemetic ondansetron
