Fertility concerns hold back tamoxifen use

Concerns about fertility are holding back young women with breast cancer from taking tamoxifen and also leading others to discontinue their treatment, a US study shows.

While the majority of 515 premenopausal patients followed their doctor’s advice and took tamoxifen, 4.7% declined to start the therapy and a further 3.9% discontinued before the five year mark either because they had become pregnant or wanted to try to have a child, the researchers say.
