Fertility treatment does not increase breast cancer risk

A study covering a cohort of more than 12,000 women, with 30 years’ follow-up, found those taking clomiphene citrate or gonadotropins for infertility had no greater risk of breast cancer compared to women not treated with the drugs.

However, certain groups of women, including those exposed to 12 or more cycles of clomiphene and those who were unable to become pregnant after taking the drugs, did have an increased risk, suggesting continued monitoring was essential, the researchers said.
