Few GPs prescribing for hep C treatment due to complexity

Only 70 GPs in Australia can prescribe the current standard of care – pegylated interferon and ribavirin – as part of shared care arrangements with specialists, according to an economic analysis of the impact of hepatitis C published today.

The report, funded by Janssen and carried out by The Boston Consulting Group, said that of the 70 only a small number can initiate treatment and many do not even prescribe maintenance treatment, though qualified to do so.

However, Professor Robert Batey of the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM) said it was a good result to have that
