First drug-resistant TB transmission in Australia
Two weeks ago a Torres Strait Islander woman died in Cairns from a mutant strain that originated in Papua New Guinea, Queensland Health said in a statement.
Laboratory test results confirmed that the infection was multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).
The woman, an Australian citizen residing in Cairns, was admitted to Cairns Hospital on 23 September.
According to Cairns Hospital, the patient was a frequent traveller to the Torres Strait and PNG.
