Flatulence linked to imbalance of gut microbiota
In a study of 30 patients with flatulence and 20 healthy controls, researchers evaluated the effect of a high-fibre dietary challenge.
They found the amount of gas produced by patients with flatulence after a standard meal was actually within normal range. The high-fibre meals led to increased gas and abdominal discomfort in both patients and controls.
However, only the patients with flatulence had reduced microbial diversity, suggesting treatment strategies could focus on microbiota rather than restrictive diets, the authors said.
