Flu shots significantly cut pneumonia hospitalisations
INFLUENZA vaccination reduces the risk of hospitalisation for influenza-related pneumonia by nearly 60%, a case control study suggests.
The US study has reviewed 2700 children and adults with community-acquired pneumonia over three consecutive flu seasons, of whom 6% tested positive for influenza on nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swabs and were defined as ‘cases’.
The controls were those with pneumonia who were negative for influenza.
