SCATTERGUN testing for vitamin B12 and folate deficiency is a waste of time and money, pathologists say.
The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) vice-president Dr Michael Harrison says B12 and folate screening aren’t warranted in patients with non-specific symptoms such as weakness and tiredness.
“As risk factors for vitamin B12 and folate deficiency do not generally overlap, levels should not be routinely requested together, except in suspected malabsorption,” he says.
