Fracture risk higher in some coeliac patients

Some coeliac patients are at a higher risk of hip fracture than others, new research shows.

In a study of over 7,000 patients those with persistent villous atrophy on follow-up biopsy had a significantly increased risk of hip fracture compared to patients with signs of mucosal healing.

Patients with persistent villous atrophy had a hip fracture rate of 158 per 100,000 person-years of observation, compared to 69 per 100,000 person-years of observation in patients with mucosal healing, the Swedish researchers found.
