Maternal parenting stress increased the likelihood of punitive parenting, which was associated with a decrease in nurturing parenting. Maternal parenting stress was also associated with withdrawn, anxious and depressed symptoms in the children.
The authors concluded that poverty itself, rather than an underlying psychiatric disorder, caused anxiety in poor mums.
“There is a physical need in the real world that is unmet and produces anxiety,” they wrote.
