Gender differences in risk of stroke

The US study in 30,000 people with type 2 diabetes followed for seven years showed that every 1% increase in baseline HbA1c was associated with a 5% increased risk of stroke in women but only a 1% increased risk in men.

The increased risk was most marked in women aged 55 or older, where their stroke risk increased by 5% for every 1% increase in HbA1c compared with a 2% increased risk in younger women.

The association between baseline HbA1c and stroke risk in women was unchanged by race or glucose-lowering agents.
