Genetics is a powerful predictor of diabetes

The Whitehall II observational cohort study of 6700 people showed that of 645 who developed diabetes, 94% were ‘stable overweight’ over 14 years.

Stable overweight people had steep increases in fasting and two-hour plasma glucose concentrations a few years before diagnosis, with rapid increase of insulin resistance.

Around 20% of the stable overweight group had a family history of diabetes compared with only 11% in the persistently obese group and 10% in the diabetes-free group,
