Gestational diabetes linked to overweight daughters

The daughters of women who develop gestational diabetes and are overweight before pregnancy are at increased risk of being obese during childhood, according to a US study.

The long-term study involving a multi-ethnic cohort of 421 girls and their mothers is among the first to directly link maternal hyperglycaemia to offspring being overweight later, say the researchers.

Gestational diabetes is associated with the daughters being overweight, and the association is  much stronger if the mother is overweight before pregnancy, says lead author Dr Ai Kubo of the Kaiser
