The textbooks are wrong: the inner surface area of the digestive tract is not the size of a tennis court after all, but more like that of a studio flat, say Swedish researchers.

Widely cited calculations put the size at 180 to 300m2, but using data from radiological investigations and studies of microscopic structure, investigators from the University of Gothenburg found it was only 30-40m2.
