Glaring gaps hamper back pain progress

A lack of funding and education together with a gap between evidence and practice is hampering efforts to improve outcomes for patients with lower back pain, an expert says.

Speaking at the Australian Rheumatology Association conference in Hobart Professor Chris Maher, director of the Musculoskeletal Division at the George Institute for Global Health, said a myriad of issues were slowing down efforts to improve outcomes for patients with acute low back pain.

And a glaring gap between best practice evidence and management of the condition in primary care was not helping matters, he said.
