Glucagon infusion useful for insulin overdose

A continuous intravenous infusion of glucagon could be a useful adjunct in the management of insulin overdose in young people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), according to Australian endocrinologists.

They report on a case of a 15-year-old boy with T1DM who presented with hypoglycaemia following an overdose of an unknown quantity of premixed insulin.

They found hypoglycaemia persisted despite the infusion of dextrose 12% through peripheral venous access and hourly administration of 1mg subcutaneous glucagon
