Go easy on testosterone in men with heart disease: specialists

TESTOSTERONE replacement therapy should be used with caution in older men with known cardiovascular disease, according to a position statement from Australian endocrine specialists.

In the second part of an updated guide on testosterone prescribing published in the MJA today, the Endocrine Society of Australia says the evidence on cardiovascular risk linked to the therapy is “contradictory and inconclusive”.

Its statement comes as a testosterone product sponsor claims last year’s changes to PBS criteria, which lowered the threshold for treatment from 8nmol/L to 6 nmol
