Good outcomes for nipple-sparing mastectomy

Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) with implant reconstruction for patients with early breast cancer is safe and effective, Sydney surgeons report.

Their review of 87 women who underwent 118 NSMs at Westmead Hospital between 2008 and 1012 showed that only seven patients developed recurrent disease, with a mean time to recurrence of 15.5 months.

The nipple-areola complex (NAC) was preserved in 92% of cases, the authors reported.
