Gooseberries good for endothelial function

The active ingredient, Phyllanthus emblica, given at high dose, was shown in an Indian study to improve endothelial function and markers of oxidative stress, including nitric oxide levels, as effectively as 10mg atorvastatin after 12 weeks.

Compared to placebo, P. emblica at 250mg reduced total cholesterol by 11%, at 500mg by 14% and atorvastatin at 10mg by 25%.

LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were also decreased, HDL cholesterol increased, and HbA1c decreased with P. emblica compared with placebo.
