Gout prevalence higher than thought

New research suggests considerably more Australians may have gout than previously thought.

The longitudinal study of 5,000 randomly selected South Australians found an overall gout prevalence of 5.2%, with men much more likely to have the condition than women (8.5% vs 2.1%).

This is much higher than in Europe and the UK, where latest estimates put prevalence at around 1.4%.
