Govt considers cuts to skin cancer drugs

The Federal Government has reopened an inquiry into skin cancer, which is predicted to consider cost-cutting measures for solar keratosis treatments.

Announced Thursday, the inquiry is expected to investigate the large discrepancy between Medicare and PBS spending on the treatment of early-stage skin cancers.

Around 90 million solar keratoses have been treated with liquid nitrogen in Australia over the past 20 years, at huge expense to Medicare, dermatologist Professor Rodney Sinclair
