GP program slashes stroke hospitalisations

Stroke hospitalisations dropped by 17% after the introduction of a program to promote aspirin prescribing among GPs, a NSW study shows.

First-time GP prescriptions of aspirin rose by 20%, with an associated decrease in NSW stroke admissions, following the NPS MedicineWise program.

The authors say new aspirin prescribing had been falling in the years before the program, while stroke hospitalisation rates had been rising.
