GPs and psychiatrists divided over quetiapine prescribing

Psychiatrists and GPs are divided over the source of a 200-fold increase in off-label quetiapine prescribing in the past decade.

Dr Jonathan Brett of Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital writes in the journal Australian Prescriber that the growing use of off-label quetiapine needs urgent action because it exposes patients to potential harm, including death.

Around two-thirds of initial prescriptions for quetiapine are written by GPs, suggesting they are not for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, says Dr Brett, who specialises in addiction medicine.
