GPs key to boosting bowel cancer screen rates

Jon Emery, Herman Professor of Primary Care Cancer Research at the University of Melbourne, says letters of endorsement from GPs have an undoubted positive effect in encouraging patients to go through with screening.

“It is a relatively simple thing to do, for a practice to identify patients approaching the age points for bowel cancer tests, so they can send out a letter a few weeks in advance,” he said at the RACGP 2014 conference.

“But it is not something we do enough of.”
