GPs offering lung cancer screening against official advice

GPs are opportunistically screening patients for lung cancer contrary to Australian guidelines, research from WA reveals.

In a survey of 93 GPs conducted by the RACP, almost 70% said they had recently requested a screening chest X-ray and/or a low-dose CT scan for asymptomatic patients they considered high-risk for lung cancer.

And while only one in 10 GPs believed lung cancer screening was recommended in the guidelines, 62% said they would recommend a screening CT scan to asymptomatic current smokers and 54% would recommend
