GPs urged to avoid prescribing single opioids
USE of single opioid medicines for chronic pain in primary care and long waiting times for multidisciplinary care may be contributing to growing harms, a specialist warns.
Dr Malcolm Hogg, head of pain management services at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and past president of the Australian Pain Society, says difficulties in accessing specialist pain services are contributing to growing misuse of opioids.
“Service delivery is disjointed,” he says. “Links between primary health care and specialist tertiary services are problematic
