Greater awareness of skin cancer improves survival

A report from Cancer Research UK found 10-year survival was now 80% in men and 90% in women, compared to 38% and 58% respectively in the 1970s.

The research body said greater awareness of symptoms and improved treatments were contributing to the increased survival.

However skin cancer remained one of the fastest rising cancers in the UK.

This was being fuelled partly by affordable package holidays to warmer beachside destinations introduced in previous decades, said Dr Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research
