Guide for GPs shifting patients over to premix insulin

AUSTRALIAN GPs now have a guide to switching patients from basal-bolus to premix insulin, which has been developed by a team of specialists and GPs.

As type 2 diabetes management is increasingly common, it is important to have clear guidelines on initiating, intensifying and switching insulin regimens in primary care, the authors say.

Neither medication is superior, instead the guide “emphasises the importance of individualising therapies according to patients’ needs, wants and capacity to cope with a particular regimen”, says co-author Dr Gary Kilov, a Launceston GP.
