Half of Australian women undergo mammogram

The report, released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), showed that while the total number of women participating in BreastScreen Australia has increased during every two-year reporting period between 1996 and 2009, the rate of participation has varied.

The age-standardised rate of participation for women aged 50–69 was 51.5% in 1996–1997 and hit a high of 57.1% in 2001–2002, before dipping slightly.

Participation rates have increased year-on-year in Queensland, SA, NT and Tasmania but fell in the other states and territories.
