Health systems failing pregnant women

In a review of 99 studies, researchers found healthcare workers were often confused about the timing of the two doses of the prophylactic drug sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and clinics sometimes faced a lack of water.

The median coverage of two doses of SP was only 24.5%, and delays in women seeking antenatal care also prevented them being issued with insecticide-treated bed nets.

The key barriers to prevention of malaria using these interventions were consistent across 27 countries, the researchers said.
