Heart cells may recover following box jellyfish stings

Revelations that heart cells which appear to have died can fully recover after four hours could change the way people are treated following stings, scientists at James Cook University in Cairns suggest.

Zoology student Stephanie Chaousis found two protein groups in the venom which specifically attack heart cells in a two-step process: a larger group which resulted in 70% cell ‘death’ followed by 100% recovery after four hours; and a smaller group which resulted in permanent cell death after 10 hours.
