Hendra vaccine rollout to begin in high-risk areas in Qld and NSW
Developed over two years by Pfizer Animal Health and the CSIRO’s Animal Health Laboratory in collaboration with two US institutions, Equivac HeV is first being distributed to vets in high-risk areas in Queensland and NSW.
The virus was identified in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra in 1994, following the death of a champion horse trainer. Four of seven people infected have died, all in Queensland. It has also killed 81 horses, including nine this year.
