Hep C patients benefit from regular psychiatric screening

A study of nearly 400 such patients attending the Royal Adelaide Hospital liver clinic from 2006 to 2010 found probable prevalence rates of 41% for anxiety and 27% for depression, which were higher than the community norms.

Younger patients in particular experienced increased anxiety, the researchers found.

Around 10,000 new hepatitis C notifications are recorded in Australia each year and up to one in five patients with acute infection goes on to develop cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease.
