Herbicide linked to increased choanal atresia in children

US researchers studied birth defects in babies born in Texas between 1999–2008 and assessed maternal atrazine exposure.

They found mothers who were likely to be highly exposed to atrazine were almost 80% more likely to have children with choanal atresia than those with low exposure.

Atrazine is considered an endocrine disruptor, the authors said.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) said atrazine was one of the most studied herbicides in the world and it was unlikely to take
