Hidden respiratory hazard in e-cig flavourings

US researchers have raised concerns about potential respiratory damage caused by flavourings in e-cigarettes.

Reporting in JAMA, Dr Jessica Barrington-Trimis of the University of Southern California and colleagues highlight the dangers of two chemicals commonly found in e-cigarettes: diacetyl and 2,3-pentenedione.

Diacetyl is used to give foods a buttery or creamy flavouring and is approved for ingestion by the Food and Drug
