High maternal perchlorate levels may impact child’s IQ

Researchers have discovered an association between high maternal perchlorate levels during pregnancy and subsequent adverse IQ in children.

The Cardiff University and Boston University School of Medicine-led study looked at the age-three IQ of 487 children born to mothers who had suboptimal thyroid function and iodine deficiency during pregnancy.

They found women with perchlorate levels in the highest 10% of the study population were more likely to have offspring with verbal IQ in the lowest 10%.
