High progesterone levels sharpens memories

High progesterone levels can heavily influence the emotional memories of women in response to stressful stimuli, according to Australian researchers.

The study found women with high levels of progesterone combined with strong mental imagery were more likely to consolidate new emotional memories with intricate details, especially when asked to recall visually-processed images.

It’s likely due to the facilitative effect of progesterone on glucocorticoid and neural systems in response to emotional arousal, says the paper published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.
