High-risk patients miss out on statins
AN AMERICAN study has therefore assessed how the drugs are being used.
The study used data from the National Health Interview Survey which sampled about 15,000 households in 2010.
There were 16,712 people aged 30–79 years in the survey. More than 38% had hyperlipidaemia and 8% had coronary heart disease (CHD).
About 47% of the patients with hyperlipidaemia and 58% of those with heart disease were using a statin. Only about 16% of those with heart disease but without hyperlipidaemia, were taking a statin.
