Higher statin dose for at-risk?

New American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association guidelines have shifted clinical practice emphasis from achieving specific targets, to focusing on identifying the patients most likely to benefit from statins.

The guidelines identify four groups for whom statins have the greatest chance of preventing stroke and myocardial infarction — those with pre-existing CVD; patients with an LDL of 5mmol/L or higher; type 2 diabetes patients aged 40—75; and those patients with absolute 10-year CVD risk of greater than 7.5% .
